Swiss/German Celebration 24 July 1899

This is a fascinating photo from Kelvin Wursten shared on FamilySearch.  It contains the only photograph I know of my Great Great Great Grandfather Johann Christoph Nuffer.  He is to the right of the tree, furthest back.  If you zoom in, it is a fairly good photo of him.  I wish I had the photo that all the paintings are of, but I guess this will have to do until it turns up somewhere.

This photo was taken a Swiss/German Celebration in Logan, Utah in what was known as the 7th Ward.  This party took place at the Kloepfer home on what is called The Island.  It was also referred to Polly Wog Town due to all the frogs.  This photo was taken by Eugene Schaub, who a few years later in 1902 would have Johann Christoph Nuffer for a step-father. The meetings of this Swiss/German group apparently helped in creating that relationship.

I have previously shared the biography of Johann Christoph Nuffer as told by his granddaughter, Alma Katherine Scheibel Naef.  There are a couple of others who are known in the photo.  You will have to go to FamilySearch to get the identification on lining the right face to the exact person.  But I recount the names and dates for your information below.

Friedrich Theodor Andra

Theodor Andra

I had to share this photo.  I was dropped off a copy of a family history book that belonged to Golden Rulon Andra.  It is obviously his book and most of the information and documents are from his own hand.  I just scanned more than 100 photos but haven’t really gotten into the book yet.  As I was skimming the pages, this little 1″ X 1″ photo caught my attention.  I had never seen it before.  It was next to the information for Theodor Andra.  I had to scan that page for this purpose.  I have already uploaded it to FamilySearch.

Here is the photo/picture I had.  What a difference between an photo and a sketch/picture.  The picture is of a fuller Theodor, so I don’t know if that is artistic difference or if it is a different period in time.

I have written previously about Theodor and you can read it here.

Keep looking everyone.  These finds are still out there!

This is another photo that caught my eye.  I can almost imagine myself in the image because this is my home town.

This picture is taken from atop the Watson Farm Supply Store.  Here is a picture of that building.

The two story building on the right is the Merrill’s Food Market.

The brick two-story building behind is the Adams Building.  Here is photo of it from the east looking west.

Across the street from Merrill’s is Feeders Grain.  Here is a picture of it.

The first time I stumbled upon this picture it has captured my attention for some reason.

The sunshine and the general happiness and contentment of the children?  How beautiful the children are?

The apparently well-manicured law in post-war California?  Taken at the Cattell home on Estacia Court in Cucamonga, California.

“BUEHLER TANK” is written on the building behind?  I did some research and found this link to a home I believe not far from this location: “Significant to the community, this 1913 turn of the century residence is part of a group of dwellings built on smaller city lots near the Cucamonga town center. Because of its proximity to the Cucamonga town center, merchants and business owners made these homes their temporary dwellings. In 1920, Walter A. Buehler purchased the home and lived there with his wife Lillian and their two sons and two daughters until 1944. He established Buehler Tank Works, which was a major local industry and employer of the community during World War II.”  Walther Albert Ludwig Buehler (1890-1970).

Frank Corsaro confirmed the building.  Apparently on the east of Archibald, just north of Foothill Drive.  The lot to the south, on the right, was the storage for their large concrete pipes.

Clifford and Frank would borrow the mule from the storage yard for their ‘paper drives.’  Clifford and Frank were best friends.

I am not sure of the occasion or why all the children are pointing to the head of the boy sitting in front.  Frank says it was Kenny Cattell’s birthday.

Two of them are cousins of mine.  Franklin George Corsaro on the back right and Josephine Ina Corsaro standing front left.  They were born in 1936 and 1943, both are still alive.  Their mother is the half-sister to my Grandfather Milo James Ross (1921-2014).

Also in the photo are Virginia Marie Valli (1943-?), Clifford Edward Cattell (1937-?), Robert Glenn Hill (1945-2012), and Kenneth Lee Cattell (1943-?)

Regina Nuffer Wanner Photo

Regina Friederike Nuffer Wanner

This is a picture of my Great Great Grandmother Regina Friederike Nuffer Wanner.  I have written a more thorough history of her before.

This large photo is in the possession of Karen Hodges of Preston, Idaho.  My Uncle Larry Andra was able to visit and get some pictures of the large photos.  I have already uploaded this to FamilySearch and linked her properly.  I recommend all go and see the free family history tree and related documents and memories/photos there.  http://www.familysearch.org

This painted picture does create questions for me.  I assume the photo has the angle to it because of how Larry took the photograph.  Was this portrait on the top of the stack as it appears to have the most damage to it of all the photos in the stack.  Was this photo done about the same time as George’s photo?  What was the occasion?

It isn’t the highest quality of portrait due to time and angle.  But it provides another glimpse into Regina Nuffer.  Here is another picture of her I very much appreciate.

John George Wanner Jr Photo

John George Wanner Jr

This is a picture of my Great Great Grandfather John George Wanner Jr.  His name in Germany was Johann Georg Wanner.  I have written a more thorough history of him before.  He went by George during his life since he was a Junior.

This large photo is in the possession of Karen Hodges of Preston, Idaho.  My Uncle Larry Andra was able to visit and get some pictures of the large photos.  I have already uploaded this to FamilySearch and linked him properly.  I recommend all go and see the free family history tree and related documents and memories/photos there.  http://www.familysearch.org

The photo, a painted picture, does create questions for me.  Why is he dressed up?  What was the occasion?  But the more interesting part of the photo is what is found on the back of the photo.

While the photo snapped by Larry cuts off some of the dates, it gives a great copy of his signature.  I don’t have the record of when he was ordained a High Priest, but he served as a missionary to California from 1 December 1933 to 6 April 1934.  He returned at age 63 so I don’t think this photo is of him at the same time, he just wrote the back of the photo over the age of 63.

It is nice to have a copy of his handwriting in addition to the photos we have of him.

Playing Around Selfie

James, Hiram, and Lillian Ross on a pleasant Sunday

This is one of those photos that seems to capture a small moment that pass us by every day, especially with playing children.

James has been playing with gloves and mittens regularly lately, but also had the little play phone that he was walking around and taking photos.  At the end of the hall, he then wanted to take some pictures with Hiram so Hiram happily obliged him.  Then they pulled Lillie into it as well.  I thought I better capture the picture of them taking a selfie of themselves.

Buhl School, 5th Grade, 1947-48

Buhl School, 5th Grade, 1947-48, Alice Blayney teacher, Bud Coley is in front row, fourth from left

This photo is from Colleen Coley Todd.  She lives in Buhl and is my cousin through the Coley line.

I thought I better share it in hopes we might be able to name some more of the individuals in the photo.  Any information I get I would be happy to add and update.  I would anticipate most of these kids were born in 1935-1936.

I know two of the people in the photo.  The name of the teacher, Alice Blayney, caught my eye.  I have been involved in some Blayney litigation in Minidoka County for 4 years now.  I was curious if she was related.

Alice Marguerite Blayney was born 3 July 1923 in Acequia, Minidoka, Idaho.  She later married Allen Lester McCain (1913 – 1994) 21 June 1953 in Rupert, Minidoka, Idaho.

She is the older sister of William Donald Blayney (1930 – 2014).  I am the Personal Representative of Donald Blayney and his wife Irene Vilhauer Blayney (1926 – 2015).  I am still in that probate on an appellate level and now defending a separate litigation in relation to the Probate.  How is that for a small world?

Front row, fourth from the left in the black sweater is Lorus “Bud” Ivan Coley (1936 – 1962).  He is the reason Colleen has the picture as it is her brother.  He was born 1 August 1936 in Buhl, Twin Falls, Idaho and died 23 October 1962 in what may or may not be a hunting accident in Twin Falls County mountains.
