One Year Anniversary

Yesterday was my one year anniversary as an attorney in the State of Idaho.  We don’t have any plans to celebrate, but I just thought I would make a note of the date.  I wanted to include a picture I took in 2005 and the only one that I could find that really seemed to indicate my fondness for Idaho.  Therefore, this photo of me and George Laird Shoup.

Paul Ross and George Laird Shoup

I don’t expect anyone outside of Idaho to know who George Laird Shoup is or what his relationship is to me or Idaho.  Honestly, I might be surprised if the majority of Idahoans know about him.

As you might be able to tell, his statue is one of Idaho’s two in the National Statuary Hall Collection located in the United States Capitol.  As a side, the other statuary from Idaho is William Edgar Borah, who I could not get a photograph with due to his location in the US Capitol.  This statuary was donated over a century ago.  I do believe he is like many other historical figures, he was just in the right place at the right time.  Shoup was appointed by President Harrison as Governor of the Idaho Territory.  After Idaho became a state he was elected Idaho’s first Governor.  The Idaho Legislature then elected Mr. Shoup as one of Idaho’s first United States Senators.  As Governor, he only served a few weeks.  He served just over 10 years as US Senator before he was defeated.  Other than being the first Governor and one of the first Senators, I don’t know that he leaves any other lasting legacy on our State.  But his statuary still represents us in Washington, DC.

Young Jonas Photos

Three new photos of my mother’s family showed up recently.  I thought I would make these photos available since I made all the other photos I have of my Jonas Grandparents have already been made available.

This first photo is from about 1956 and shows my grandparents, Norwood and Colleen Jonas, with my mother and uncle.  I don’t know the location.

Colleen, Sandra, Norwood, and Douglas Jonas, ca 1956

This next photo I expect was taken about 1957 or so. This photo is beside their home in Richmond, Cache, Utah.

Sandy and Doug Jonas, ca 1957

This last photo is of my Grandpa, Norwood Jonas, with Jackie Jonas in June 1970.

Thomas and Cottle

Here are two more photos from my Great Grandmother’s collection that have names written on them.  I will make the rest of them available that we just don’t have a clue about at another time.  Both were given to Lillian Coley Jonas, probably from classmates or close friends.

Irene Cottle gave this photo to Lillian and states the same.  I assume this was a close friend of some sort.  Irene Elizabeth Cottle born 20 November 1893 in Richmond, Cache, Utah and died in La Grande, Union, Oregon.  She married Edward William Pfel.

“To Lillian” signed “Irene Cottle” The frame indicates Foulgers Photo Stop, Garland, Utah

This photo from “Dellas Thomas”, at least that is how the name is spelled on the back.  Taken in Lewiston, Cache, Utah on 27 December 1914.  Perhaps a boyfriend at the time?  John Dellas Thomas was born 21 September 1896 in Lewiston and died 19 January 1985.

Bliss, Idaho

This photo is one that was among many in my Great Grandmother’s possessions.  Since I don’t have a clue who she is, I thought I would make it available with the information that is written on the back.

“Sweet Dorothy J Gruel”  (This may be Gruett, Cruett, Gruell, or some other variation in cursive writing.)

“Bliss, Idaho”

“Box 175”

“Age 14”

I recognize the building because it is still there and Bliss doesn’t have many buildings.  I don’t know if it was all grades in one, or just a high school.  Either way, I assume Ms. Dorothy knew my Great Grandmother, Lillian Coley, and sent the photo to her.  There is a chance this photo was sent to Lillian’s mother, Martha Christiansen Coley, and could be a niece or something to her.  I do not have her in my family file, cannot find her name anywhere, and hope this will be useful to someone.  My Great Grandmother Lillian was born in 1898, so if this girl is roughly the same age, this photo would have been taken around 1912.

Dentist Office #6

I don’t know why, but I thought I would share this only photo I have of the place I lived at Utah State from 2003 to 2005.  It is located on Darwin Avenue in Logan, Utah and is colloquially known as Dentist Office.  Aptly named from the dentist office that occupies the front of the building.  Anyhow, many memories here and just one, somewhat poor, photo.  Maybe someday I will return and get a better photo.

My bed was immediately below the top right window for the entire time I lived there.  I believe the address was something like 655 Darwin Avenue and we were in Apartment #6.

Ellis Seth Jonas

With the passing of Uncle Ellis and his funeral today, I thought I would make available the pictures I have of him over the years similar to other family members.  My way of remembering him and honouring the family.  Until we meet again.

Ellis Seth Jonas was born 6 September 1926 in Lewiston, Cache, Utah to Lillian Coley and Joseph Nelson Jonas.  The fifth child of eight to his parents (my Grandfather, Norwood, was fourth).  Ellis was born on the tenth wedding anniversary of his parents.  He married Geraldine Pitcher 17 August 1946 in Elko, Elko, Nevada.  My Grandparents were going to elope and go at the same time but chickened out and ended up making the trip the next month.  Five children were born to the marriage; Kent in 1949, Mary Lou in 1951, Julie in 1954, Dan in 1958, and Ron in 1965.  Ellis died at home in Smithfield, Cache, Utah 12 August 2012 and will be buried today, 18 August 2012 in Smithfield.

I have this graduation picture.  I don’t know if it is high school or college, probably graduation from Utah State in 1951 or 1952.  At this link are a couple of photos from Ellis’ days coaching baseball.

Wilburn Norwood Jonas

Similar as I have done with other family members, I thought I would make available all the pictures I have of Grandpa.  I won’t write much, just present the few photos and documents I have in chronological order, as best I can tell.

Wilburn Norwood “Nor” Jonas was born 15 May 1924 in Lewiston, Cache, Utah to Lillian Coley and Joseph Nelson Jonas.  The fourth child of eight to his parents.  He married Colleen Mary Andra 27 September 1946 in Elko, Elko, Nevada.  Three children were born to him and Colleen; Douglas in 1952, Sandra in 1954, and Jackie in 1960.  He died 14 March 1975 in Burley, Cassia, Idaho and was buried 19 March 1975 in Richmond, Cache, Utah.
