Melycher Family History

John & May, Mary, Michael, William, Stephen, Michael Jr, Suzanna, Anthony, Anna, Myrtle & Joseph Melycher

My Aunt Jackie married Willie Melycher in 1987. I wrote and shared some memories of their wedding previously. Somewhere around 2003, I stopped and visited Willie. We ended up talking about family history and he whipped out this family history. I have had it in my possession since then. I eventually scanned it so I had a digital copy. Recently I had it transcribed. Now I make it available in a much easier format.

MELYCHER FAMILY HISTORY

This history was compiled by Mary A. Melycher in memory of my husband Anthony F. Melycher.  Information was given by family members, vital statistics and birth certificates.  It is hoped that each member receiving a copy please keep it undated so that it will be a valuable source of information for the future.

The information was completed on this date January 14, 1986.

The Melycher family name was entered in the American Immigrants Wall of Honor by M.A. Melycher.  It will be permanently displayed in the renowned Ellis Island, where the family arrived when they came to America.

Michael Melycher

Born in Austria in the year of 1869 (this information taken from birth certificate of Anthony F. Melycher and from a prayer card given out at the time of the funeral).  He died in Bridgeport, Conn. August 22, 1947 at the age of 78.  He married Suzanna Gajdosik, who was also born in Austria in the year 1878 (this information taken from birth certificate of Anthony F. Melycher and from prayer card given at the funeral).  They were married in Austria.  Suzanna died in Bridgeport Conn. on January 7, 1959.  They had ten children, one died in Austria.  Michael, John and Stephen were all born in Austria, and Joseph, Anna, and Mary were born in Croton Falls, New York, Anthony, William and Rudolph were born in Connecticut.

They operated a large dairy farm on Pond Brook Road, in Newtown, Conn. until their retirement, when they went to live with their daughter, Anna Dzurka, in Bridgeport, Conn.  Before the farm was sold many acres of land were given to family members who either built on it, sold it or passed it on to their heirs.  The homestead still stands on Pond Brook Road in Newtown, Conn.

Michael Melycher had the first accredited tuberculin tested dairy herd in the area.  The farm was a large one averageing around two hundred acres and was operated by family members.

Michael Melycher donated land to build a school in the area of George’s Hill Road, which when discontinued reverted back to him and sold to Thomas and Belle Nicholl.

Chalk Cave

5 years ago, April 2020, Ted Tateoka and I went exploring the desert. We were hunting for Chalk Cave in Blaine County, Idaho. We found a couple of caves not far off the old Picabo Desert Road, one of which was Chalk Cave.

You can tell it is early spring because of the matted desert grass.

We wandered our way through Chalk Cave, which isn’t very big. But it was well visited in the past. I snapped this picture. We never recommend you paint, carve, or in any way deface any cave. It is actually a crime, but most people never get busted.

Lavon Larsen, 20 Jan 1937

I would have to go back and check to see if I could read what is above the name. This appears to be Its Lavon Larsen 1938, 1/20/37. I believe this is Maud LaVon Larsen, born 25 October 1917 in Twin Falls, Idaho. She shows as living in rural Jerome County in 1935 pursuant to the 1940 Census. She married Louis Francis Bulcher on 31 December 1943 in Twin Falls. She passed away in Twin Falls on 26 November 2013.

Former Cache Woman Taken

This is another clipping in the Hygiene and Sanitation book I previously shared. Since Ethel died in 1941, I presume the clipping was placed in the book by my Great Grandmother, Lillian Coley Jonas. I don’t know the connection, Richmond and Hyrum were not nearby each other.

“Ethel May Monson, wife of Mantell Monson and former resident of this valley, died last evening at the Dee hospital in Ogden following an illness of a year.

“Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Hyrum Second ward chapel, with burial in that community’s cemetery. Friends may call at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hyrum Wednesday and Thursday until time of services.

“Mrs. Monson was born in Mess county, Kansas, December 3, 1887, a daughter of William F. Hulse and Elizabeth Munyon Hulse. The family joined the church and came to Hyrum in 1910. She married Mr. Monson September 20, 1911, in the Logan temple, and nine years later the couple moved to Idaho where they stayed for two years prior to their residence in Logan. They remained here until 1936 when they moved to Ogden.

“Surviving are her mother, her husband, six children: Harold Monson of San Francisco, Art Monson, Mrs. Anna Larsen and Mrs. June Schiffman of Ogden, Dale J. Monson of Long Beach, Cal., and Mrs. Carma Nielsen of Logan; six grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. C. L. Thomas of San Francisco, Eva Hulse of Tiajuana, Mex., Mrs. Lucille Richardson and George Hulse of Ogden, and Otis Hulse of San Francisco.

The article doesn’t provide the information, so I will flesh it out a bit more.

Ethel May Hulse Monson, born 3 December 1887 in Ness County Kansas, died 25 March 1941 in Ogden. Married Mantell Henry Monson, born 30 September 1890 in Hyrum, died 27 December 1953 in Hyrum.

2023 Legislative Session

Brandon Woolf, McCord Larsen, Paul Ross with Idaho State Capitol

This year I was more involved in the legislative process than in the past. There were a few bills I was particularly interested and closely involved. I even helped write a few.

On 3 March 2023 I traveled to the Idaho State Capitol with my friend and Cassia County Prosecutor McCord Larsen to testify on a particular bill related to Public Defense. While there, we took the opportunity to make a number of other calls and visits in addition to the legislators/legislative. This photo comes from one of those visits.

Brandon Woolf is the Idaho State Controller. More importantly he is my friend. He is always out and about in visiting communities and friends. I have run into him in Preston, Soda Springs, Malad, Burley, Rupert, and Boise. Not only do I respect and honor this friend, our families have been friends for generations. Brandon is from Preston, where my Andra, Nuffer, and Wanner lines are all from. I have ran into Brandon at That Famous Preston Night Rodeo, the Rodeo Days Parade (also in Preston), and even the Independence Day Breakfast in Preston. It has been a small world and an oddity that I run into this guy as much as I do.

He took us through and shows us the new Transparent Idaho website. He is pretty excited for this website to continue to be rolled out and outfitted with all information for Idaho government. That is not just state, but every taxing district from cities, to counties; from cemetery districts to school districts.

The highlight was catching up between old friends (and Aggies). For the occasion, we snapped this photo from Brandon’s office. Somehow it seems enchanting. My beloved state, a phenomenal Idaho Constitutional Officer, friendship, and a beautiful Capitol. My experience with Idaho is that we are in good hands.

As for the legislation we were working on that day, well it was a disappointment. Representatives Weber and Cannon apparently were more interested in passing a bill than getting it right. We have tons of clean-up, which is always harder the second or third year than at the beginning. I have many, many reservations on the bill generally and don’t think it cannot be cleaned up but for a rewrite. But they didn’t care about that either. For a state that is independent, local control, and willing to do things different, this bill flew in the face of all that. It centralized power, removed local stakeholders, consolidated processes, ignored processes, and all at the same time wildly underfunded. I hope I am wrong, but I think it will get worse before it gets better.

Other bills were introduced too late and didn’t get too far. Others passed through unmarred and become clarifying law. The updates of bankruptcy related law all seem to have failed. But we will try again next year. Too bad it does not pay, it is hard doing all this on your own dime and sacrificing your gainful employment.

We were able to do lunch with our local Representative Clay Handy and visit with Representative Doug Pickett. Senator Kelly Anthon was kind enough to introduce us and welcome us from the Senate floor. We were unable otherwise to meet up with him.

Idaho is still small. I hope we do not lose the small state legislature, the gentleman’s creed, and the ability to do business. Please like Brandon keep hope in government when it is sometimes hard to keep hope in such a process.

Plain City Stake Center Dedicatory Service

In Grandpa and Grandma’s possessions were two pamphlets from the 1979 and 1954 dedications of the church buildings in Plain City, Utah. Here is the 1979. Grandpa helped work on this building. He also helped extensively on the 1954 building. As I previously wrote, Grandpa also had a hand in obtaining the land for the construction of the 2, 7, and 8 Ward building. I will share the 1954 pamphlet at a later date.

History of the Church in Plain City

A history of the Church in Plain City is and was directly related to the restoration of the Gospel in this dispensation and the organization of the Church in 1830. The conversion to Mormonism of many of the eventual settlers of Plain City and their testimonies of the truthfulness of this knowledge enabled the early saints to endure the physical hardships and the migration of modern Israel into the Salt Lake Valley.

A group of early saints, numbering about one hundred people, of neighbors, friends, and converts from Lehi, Utah, who found the water there had already been claimed, came north to Plain City on March 17, 1859 to make their new home, Their first homes were dugouts in the hill with a grass and dirt roof, and a dirt floor. Many of these dug-outs were used for meetings. Meetings were held outdoors and in a large tent.

One July 24, 1859, a dance was held on the barrens, near the dump to celebrate the saints arrival into the Salt Lake Valley. The music was furnished by a comb band, and many danced barefoot.

The first church and school was built in 1859 of adobe which was eighteen by twenty-four feet, and located on the south side of the square. In 1863 a twelve by eighteen foot split log addition was added. It was shingled at this time. A bowery of willows was constructed near the meeting house to be used in the summer. In 1874 a new building was built of adobe on the northeast corner of the square. In 1889 a brick chapel was dedicated which was across the street from the south side of the square. A kitchen, recreation all, upstairs, and classrooms were added in 1914. This building was born down in 1953. 1953-54 the present three-ward chapel was built and dedicated. This same building was remodeled and additions added. The dedication of the new remodeled building was February 14, 1971. 1978-79 the new Plain City Stake Center on 2125 North was built and dedicated September 30, 1979.

1859-1877 Plaint City was a branch with four different Presiding Elders. 1877-1960 Plain City was one ward with 12 different Bishops. 1960 the Plain City II Ward was created. 1974 the Plain City III Ward was created. 1977 the Plain City Stake was created. July 1979 the Plain City IV and V Wards were created.

History of Farr West Wards

On November 30, 1890, Harrisville and West Harrisville were divided and the west section was named Farr West. This name was selected to honor Lorin Farr, the first mayor of Ogden and former president of the Weber Stake, and Chauncy W West who prior to 1870 was presiding bishop of Weber County.

William Andrew Taylor Sr was chosen as the first bishop of the Farr West Ward (1890-1892), followed by William F McEntire (1892-1897), James Martin Sr (1898-1909), Moroni Chugg (1909-1928), Lorenzo Taylor (1928-1938), Almon D Brown (1959-1964), Brian L Taylor (1964-1971), Owen C Garlick (1971-1977). In 1972 the Farr West Ward was divided into Farr West First and Farr West Second Wards. Owen C Garlick remained bishop of Farr West First Ward and Jay A Davis became first bishop of the Farr West Second Ward (1972-1975), followed by Harold A Westergard (1975-1978), and Harvey W Higley (1978-present). Dale J Chugg followed Bishop Garlick as bishop of Farr West First (1977-present).

In 1873 the first building for church and school was built across from the present chapel. It was used until 1880 when the Ward Hall was built at the cost of $1,500. In 1926 the present chapel was dedicated by President Heber J Grant. This building cost $19,700. In 1958 an additional was built costing $142,000 and was dedicated by Richard L Evans.

In 1945 the Farr West Ward purchased 10 1/4 acres of land. This became the first welfare farm in the Farr West Stake.

The ward population listed for 1900 was 231; in 1931, 325; 1960, 577; in 1979, about 471 for Farr West First and about 670 for Farr West Second.

The Far West Wards have been in four different stakes; namely, Weber, North Weber, Farr West, and now Plain City.

Kelsey Note

This note was dropped at my office in Burley, Idaho several years ago. While I normally get Thank You cards in the mail, this is the anomaly. I believe it speaks for itself.

I was appointed to represent Delores Kelsey, Florence Delores Herron Kelsey, (1930-2017), in an eviction litigation. Some of her children were attempting to evict Bret Kelsey (1959-2020), her son, out of her home. It turned into a slog fest among a number of the Kelsey children/siblings. Brent Robinson defended Bret, Matt Darrington represented Paul Kelsey (1956-2018), Curtis Stoker was appointed as Trustee of the Kelsey Trust, and Peter Wells represented Curtis Stoker as Trustee. It took years of work. A Cassia County case, most hearings were held in Minidoka County. I think this case drove Judge Bollar to retirement faster.

Mr. Kelsey also took it upon himself to protest many attorneys over the years. I am fortunate to have also been in that club.

*Bullyous Tyrant Mormons*

This short story was created by those whom in my opinoun became Bullyous Tyrants by abuseing their power in representing Dolores Kelsey’s – Trust n Concerns –

Is Brent Robinson – Attorney at Law – Mormon an “Angel of Darkness?”

Is Matt Darrington – Attorney at Law -Mormon a “Freeloader of People?” – Mormon

Is Paul Ross – Attorney at Law -Mormon “One Whom Takes Advantage of Elderly?”

Is Curtis Stoker – Trustee – Mormon A “Lying – Distrespectful – Dishonest?”

Is Peter Wells – Attorney at Law – Mormon   A “Pretender of the Truth?”

Unknowingly pierced by BEELZEBUBS dagger of darkness these Bullyous Mormons have become corrupted, there by extorting unjustifiable cruelties!!!! I leave you with a quote. “Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Preston High School Girls Athletic Association – 1945

Preston Girls Athletic Association from 1945 Yearbook

Looking through the Preston High School yearbook for 1945, I found my Grandmother, Colleen Mary Andra. The rest of the photos in the book are unnamed as to the individuals. As I looked through, I found this photo with her on the farthest right of the photo in the black.

Here is the writing on the same page related to the photo.

“The Girls’ Athletic Association is a club sponsoring a more active interest in athletics. During the past year the club has sponsored a softbal tournament and a game tournament. In the G.A.A. there are now more than eighty-seven paid up members, fourteen who have earned their letters. The faculty advisor is Mrs. June Larsen. The president is Carol Greaves.

I believe the June Larsen mentioned is June Call Larson (1919-1995). I cannot tell if she is in the picture.

Also mentioned is Carol Greaves, who I believe married Wayne Brown and still lives in Preston.
